The St. Johannes church is located in the Göggingen district of Augsburg and is the institutional church of the Hessing Clinic . The listed building is on Wellenburger Strasse and was inaugurated in 1906.

History and description

The church was built between 1890 and 1893. Friedrich Hessing's court architect, Jean Keller, was responsible as the architect . Hessing influenced the building. His idea of holistic medicine also took religion and pastoral care into account.

The sacred building is a “successful interplay of neo-baroque shell, neo-Gothic interior design and walls and windows decorated in Art Nouveau. The mayor of Göggingen, Leo Eichleitner , took care of the latter. In addition to his municipal office, he was also very successful as a glass master and glass painter ”. The institution church is characterized by valuable carvings.

The altar was also designed by Jean Keller. It shows the crucified Jesus in an impressive way. Mary and the disciple whom Jesus loved stand at the foot of the cross. The cross group is framed on the right and left by the Apostles Peter and Paul. God the Father, who sends the Holy Spirit, blesses those who seek salvation and comfort. In addition to the altar, the Steinmeyer organ from 1896, which is only operated with compressed air, is another gem of the Simultankirche . Hessing himself, who u. a. was also an organ builder, laid down the disposition . Another special feature is the wooden relief of Saint Barbara attached to the pulpit. The carving dates from the 16th century and is assigned to the Riemenschneider School.

As a simultaneous church, the house of God serves both major Christian religions. For the Catholic Church one finds the typical attributes such as tabernacle, confessional and holy water kettle. The decoration of the altar and pulpit with the biblical figures or allegorical figures, as well as the hymn board, refer to evangelical identifying marks.
