The still preserved east and south wings of the former Hessing'schen Ökonomie- und Heilanstalt

The Hessing Clinic in Augsburg was founded in 1868 and is one of the largest specialist orthopedic clinics in Europe . The clinic became known nationwide, among other things, through the associated Kurhaus Göggingen . Today it is run by the Hessing Foundation as a specialist hospital for orthopedics, rheumatology and geriatrics . The clinics treat 7,500 inpatients and 35,000 outpatients every year.

history

The Hessing Clinic was founded in 1868 by Friedrich Ritter von Hessing , a pioneer in the field of orthopedic technology, as the "Hessing'sche Ökonomie- und Heilanstalt" and soon grew to become the largest European health resort: Hessing is to treat a total of 60,000 patients there to have.

The first clinic buildings were built by Jean Keller in the romantic - neo-baroque style of the Wilhelminian era , whereby two wing structures of the entire building (east and south wing) are still preserved today. In 1908, Hessing had a monument erected for himself (which is now in front of the main entrance to the clinic):

The location between the neo-baroque side wings of the Neue Anstalt was the center of a cour d'honneur - a court of honor ... The monument - showing the councilor as a friend of children - was created by Eugen Boermel and cast in Berlin .

In order to increase the cultural offerings for the patients during their stays, Hessing also had the Kurhaus Göggingen built by Keller in 1886, which was already considered a “building miracle” when it opened and is today the only preserved multifunctional theater in glass and cast iron construction from the early days. In addition, from 1890 to 1893 Keller built the institution's own church of St. Johannes with a neo-baroque facade and neo-Gothic interior, which is now a listed building , as is a guest house, which was opened in 1896 according to plans by Karl Albert Gollwitzer as a conversion of a garden villa built around 1860.

Bertha Kipfmüller , who stayed at the Hessing Clinic around 1910, wrote in retrospect about her stay in the clinic:

The stay was wonderful. Wonderful rooms, the common dining table with exquisite flowers from our own greenhouse. In the middle of winter constant spring! ... In addition, an audience from all over the world, including Russia. There was none other than the daughter of the almighty minister Stolypin ... A large entourage was with her and when they celebrated the Russian New Year they rumbled so much that I not only feared for my sleep, but also feared the ceiling collapse .
