Thomas Burr Osborne (politician)

Thomas Burr Osborne (born July 8, 1798 in Weston , Fairfield County , Connecticut , †  September 2, 1869 in New Haven , Connecticut) was an American politician . Between 1839 and 1843 he represented the fourth constituency of the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas Osborne was born in Weston, now Easton, in 1798. Until 1817 he attended Yale College . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1820, he began to work in Fairfield in his new profession. Between 1826 and 1839, Osborne served in the administration of various Connecticut courts.

Politically, Osborne became a member of the Whig Party . In 1836 he was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives . In the congressional election of 1838 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth district of Connecticut . There he took over from Elisha Haley of the Democratic Party on March 4, 1839 . After re-election in 1840, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1843 .

After serving in the US House of Representatives, Osborne was elected to the Connecticut Senate in 1844 . He was then a district judge in Fairfield County for several years. In 1850 he was again a member of the House of Representatives of his state; then he served as a probate judge in the Fairfield District. In 1854 Osborne moved to New Haven. Between 1855 and 1865 he was a lecturer in law at Yale College. After that, he retired. Thomas Osborne died on September 2, 1869 in New Haven and was buried there. His grandson, also named Thomas Burr Osborne , became a respected biochemist.
