The private company Stadtwerke Augsburg comprises the following companies: Holding GmbH, Energie GmbH, Verkehrs-GmbH (incl. AVG mbH & ASG mbH), Wasser GmbH and, since January 2005, Netze GmbH. As the third largest public utility in Bavaria, the Stadtwerke, with its 1,900 employees, supplies around 350,000 people in the Augsburg area with electricity , natural gas , district heating and drinking water and offers mobility in city buses and trams . The water supply in Augsburg has a long history. Augsburg was one of the first cities in Bavaria to have a central supply network with drinking water, not least for the numerous magnificent fountains (at that time from the Red Gate), from which the drinking water supply of the city of Augsburg has developed to this day. The drainage (sewer system) is separated from the municipal utilities and is taken over by municipal sewage companies.
