history

During excavations under the chapel in 1956, the foundations of a larger church were exposed at a depth of more than 1 m. Due to the way they were set in stone, they were assigned to the 12th century. An originally larger church must also be accepted because in 1398 the two Pfronten settlements Steinach and Ösch had to pay the same high taxes to the sovereign and therefore Ösch was probably as big as Steinach. After that, however, the tax performance has shifted significantly in favor of Steinach. The few Öscher properties were therefore no longer able to ensure that their church was in good order. At the beginning of the 18th century, it was in need of repair and almost devoid of assets. From 1730 to 1736, however, a smaller new building was built in Ösch by the long-time church carer Georg Höß. The funds required came from donors, including Johann Chrysostomus Scheitler, born in Ösch and pastor in Geisenried .

At the beginning of the last century, on the day of St. Koloman , a horse-drawn diction with a ride around the chapel took place here. After the custom had fallen asleep for many years, it was revived around 1995.

construction

The responsible builder of the new chapel was Michael Erdt, who had already proven his skills as an architect at St. Leonhard . The stone carver Joseph Höß, the master carpenter Melchior Doser and the glazier Johannes Lochbihler are listed as other craftsmen in the holy bills (church foundation bills). The windows and door frames come from the carpenter Joseph Babel and the beautiful door fittings are from the blacksmith Christian Mayr.

A recessed chancel adjoins the rectangular nave with bevelled corners on all sides and two window axes. It has a window axis and a semicircular end. Arched windows in the west and east as well as in the sloping walls to the choir characterize the chapel as a baroque building. The sign is in the west. The choir can be entered through a small door on the opposite side. Above that, a now empty round arch niche was cut out for a statue. Here was a marble figure of St. Koloman by Maximilian Hitzelberger , for which he received 32 guilders. It is now kept in the chapel. A bell tower sits on the roof above the choir.

Furnishing

The original choir altar - by Joseph Stapf from 1742 - was replaced by a neo-Romanesque altar in 1855. The carpenter Joseph Anton Eberle (1809–1878) from Pfronten-Steinach donated it and made it himself. In the request for approval of the project, the pastor at the time, Johann Baptist Foag, wrote that the old altar with its really ugly figures does indeed make a disgusting impression . The new altarpiece was painted by Franz Osterried from Pfronten . The two side altars around or before 1800 are early classical. The statue of Our Lady of Sorrows on the right altar is signed by Sigmund Hitzelberger and dated 1798. The two ceiling frescoes date from the time it was built. One in the nave shows the glory of St. Koloman and the other in the choir shows the Holy Trinity. Bartholomäus Stapf (1704–1766) painted both paintings. He is a son of Bonaventura Stapf from Pfronten-Heitlern.

A remarkable Madonna from around 1460 hangs on the southern side wall and three old votive tablets are attached under the gallery , with which St. Koloman, the “peasant saint”, was thanked for a benefit he received.
