Bonaventura Stapf's father, the Bader and "surgeon" Nikolaus Stapf (1627–1708), married Elsa Schneider in 1652, who apparently brought her artistic talent into the family. The Stapf can justifiably be called the “central Pfronten family of artists”. Bonaventura's brother Johann Georg (1652–1731) was also a painter. His sister Ursula Stapf became the ancestral mother of the sculptor and sacristan family Hitzelberger, sister Christina that of the painter and master builder Geisenhof. The sons Mang Anton and Joseph of his brother Michael Stapf, who died early, earned lasting fame as sculptors and building experts. Bonaventura's son Bartholomäus Stapf (1704–1766) and his son Franz Sales Stapf (1743–1810) continued the family's painting tradition in direct line. Bonaventura Stapf probably completed his apprenticeship with one of the painters Bösinger in his homeland, and later he probably continued his education with an Augsburg master. In 1701 he married the Petronilla Suiter, a daughter of the wealthy landlord at St. Linhard ("Adlerwirt") in Pfronten-Heitlern. The monastery of St. Mang Bonaventura Stapf was closely associated. As early as 1714 he was mentioned as the "current valet" in the service of the Abbot of St. Mang. As a co-master, he also belonged to the Füssen guild .

Bonaventura Stapf was mainly and probably particularly successful as a barrel painter and gilder, but also as a fresco and panel painter . The Diocesan Museum in Bressanone has three oil paintings by him - "brisk, but somewhat crude pictures".
