Mang Anton Stapf (born December 17, 1701 in Pfronten -Dorf; † February 9, 1772 in Pfronten-Ried) was a southern German Rococo sculptor. As a bailiff he held the highest prince-bishop's office in Pfronten for over three decades. He came from a long-established Pfronten family, from which several nationally important painters and sculptors emerged.

The basis of the extensive Pfronten artistry was u. a. extensive freedom of guilds in connection with general freedom of trade.

Life

Mang Anton Stapf was born as the eldest son of Michael Stapf (* 1655) in Pfronten-Dorf No. 404. He lost his father at an early age († 1712). From 1718 to 1722 his mother Ursula Wetzer sent him to Augsburg, where he was trained as a sculptor by Christoph Bammer. In addition, during his stay in Augsburg, he presumably acquired the legal knowledge that later enabled him to take over the office in Pfronten. Nothing is known about his apprenticeship. The Norbertus altar from 1734 in Obermarchtal is the first work that has been archived. In Wolfegg, however, Stapf is already mentioned as the “famous sculptor of Pfrundten” in a statement from July 13, 1735. Very late, namely in 1739, Mang Anton Stapf married Cäcilia Kögel from Wertach. In the same year, the prince-bishop administration gave him their highest office in Pfronten. Stapf's son Gabriel (* 1744) also became a sculptor and a bailiff in Pfronten for a few years. In 1743 Mang Anton sold the Heimathaus in Pfronten-Dorf to his brother Joseph. When the church tower was rebuilt in Pfronten-Berg, Stapf was called in as a building expert from 1746 to 1749, alongside his brother Joseph and Peter Heel. No works by Mang Anton Stapf are known from the period after 1750. Apparently he was busy as an administrative officer. Stapf died on February 9, 1772. In the death register, the clergyman noted: Annis et meritis gravis ex hac vita discessit Spectatiss. D [ominus] Magnus Antonius Staph loci Praefectus liberè resignatus. Sacramentis Morientium devotissimè susceptis. RIP (Rich in years and merits, the freely resigned bailiff of the place, the highly respected Mr. Magnus Antonius Stapf, departed from this life after he had received the sacraments in great humility . May he rest in peace.)

plant

As a sculptor, Mang Anton Stapf worked in both wood and stone. Since he was paid several times for complete altars, it can be assumed that he was at least able to make the designs for them. The collaboration (from 1760) on the Rococo furnishings of the Maria Rain pilgrimage church , which has been cited again and again , has not yet been confirmed and has probably not taken place.
