St. Macuilin ( St Macuilin's Church ) is a former Anglican parish church of the Church of Ireland in Lusk ( County Dublin ) in Ireland .

history

Lusk was originally an early monastery complex of the Iroschottischen Church , which was founded around 500 by St. Macuilin. The monastery was repeatedly the target of looting and attacks. In 1219 the monastery was subordinated to the treasurer of the Cathedral of St. Patrick . The west tower complex was built around 1500, in which the old round tower was incorporated with three other, smaller, new flank towers. In the course of the Reformation, the Church became Anglican. In 1847 the nave of the church was replaced by a neo-Gothic building. Since 1959 the church is no longer an independent parish church and there are no more regular services.

Round tower

The round tower was built in the 10th or 11th century. Today it is 26.6 m high; whereby one must assume that the surrounding soil is 1.70 m higher today than at the time of construction. This means that the door opening is only 90 cm above the floor.

The tower is still completely preserved except for the conical tip; the top has been replaced by a flat roof.

With eight stories, this tower has more than any other Irish round tower. Each floor has a rectangular window, the sizes being different. The two openings that faced the church tower, which was built later, were walled up.

The usual four rectangular windows below the top are unusually narrow and small.
