The St. Margareth Church is a three-apse church above Mitterlana in South Tyrol . With its extensive fresco cycle, the church is one of the most important testimonies of the early Romanesque period in South Tyrol.

history

According to legend, the church, which dates back to the end of the 10th century, was founded by the Byzantine Empress Theophanu , the wife of Emperor Otto II . In 1215 the church was donated to the Teutonic Order by Emperor Frederick II . Due to its original floor plan, the church has similarities with the Church of St. Peter in Mistail in Graubünden and identifies it as a Carolingian hall church. The round apses are still preserved from the early Romanesque predecessor building. In 1896 the church was renovated in a historicizing way. Another restoration took place in 1969 and 1982.

Furnishing

The extensive fresco cycle in the apses in the church interior dates from the beginning of the 13th century and is one of the most important examples of early Romanesque wall painting in South Tyrol.
