St. Mary's Assumption Altendorf

St. Mariä Himmelfahrt is a Roman Catholic church in the Essen district of Altendorf . It was built from 1891 to 1897. Today it belongs to the parish of St. Antonius .

history

Mainly due to the expansion of Krupp , Altendorf changed from a farming village to an industrial workers' district in the second half of the 19th century. This corresponded to the establishment of a Catholic parish and the planning of a large church.

The church, designed by Franz Schmitz , was originally a neo-Romanesque basilica with a double tower facade and an octagonal crossing tower . The polygonal apse was flanked by two smaller towers. The foundation stone was laid in 1891, the benediction in 1892, the consecration in 1897. The church held more than 3000 people.

In 1943 the church was partially destroyed in World War II. It was rebuilt in a simplified manner by Engelbert Köjer by 1952. However, large parts of the architectural decoration, especially the portal facade, have been preserved.

The church building has been a listed building since 1994 .
