Jesse Lawrence Boyce (born October 20, 1881 in Las Vegas , New Mexico Territory , † November 8, 1961 in Williams , Arizona ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

Jesse Lawrence Boyce, son of Martha Murray and Cormick E. Boyce, was born in San Miguel County, New Mexico Territory , in 1881 . The Boyce family then moved to the Arizona Territory in 1882 and settled there in Williams, Coconino County . His father became a successful trader over time and also took an active role in politics. Meanwhile, Jesse attended the local school. Among his tutors were the future associate judge of the Arizona Supreme Court Henry D. Ross and the former Secretary of the Arizona Territory George U. Young , under whom he graduated at the age of twelve. He then went to St. Michael's College in Santa Fe (New Mexico Territory) for a year. Jesse then worked in sawmills for a while. At the age of 15 he worked as a cattle driver. He later visited the St. Vincent's College in Los Angeles ( California ), where he graduated in June 1900 with a trade school and 1903 with a Bachelor of Science . He was given an award for the highest grade point average in the class. He was also second best in design and rhetoric. During his student days he took a leading role in all dramatic performances. He often played the leading roles. He played on the football team for three seasons. After graduating, he went into stock trading and went western riding for a year . Then he moved to the logging camps in Northern Arizona, where he spent the next 2 years.

Boyce also had a political career. In 1906 he ran for the post of recorder from Coconino County as a Democrat against a Republican who held the post for six years. He won with a majority of 150 votes. He was re-elected with a majority of 350 votes. Jesse held the post until Arizona became a state . In early 1907 he moved to Flagstaff, Coconino County. There he married Miss Mavie Patterson in June 1907. On May 18, 1912, on the recommendation of Governor George WP Hunt , Boyce was appointed Secretary of the State Tax Commission and the Board of Equalization . Jesse held the post until he was elected Arizona State Auditor in 1916 . In 1918 he was re-elected. Jesse held the post from 1917 to 1921. From 1947 to 1950, he served in the Arizona House of Representatives .

He was a member of the Columbus Knights , the Da Silva Council in 1229 and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 499 in Flagstaff.
