The church

The Protestant village church of St. Marien , also called Frauenbergkirche , is in the town of Ellrich on the Frauenberg in the Nordhausen district in Thuringia .

history

The fortified church , consecrated in 720, is the oldest sacred structure in the Nordhausen district.

Over time, the city did not develop around the Frauenberg and the fortified church, so it remained outside the city wall and the market church became the spiritual center. Napoleon's troops used it as a horse stable.

It has been used by Protestants since 1958.

The church is a listed building .

Bells

The ringing consists of two bells. They date from 1957. Until 1964 they were driven by hand with a rope, after which bell ringing machines were installed.

The large bell has a diameter of 104 cm, a height of 82 cm and a mass of 522 kg. On the neck she has the inscription "COME WITH HIS FACE WITH FROHLOCKEN". On the front surface there is a monogram of Christ , on the back of the neck the foundry mark of the Schilling & Lattermann company, on the back surface the inscription "AD 1957".

The small bell has a diameter of 89 cm, a height of 72 cm and a mass of 288 kg. It bears the inscription "SERVE THE LORD WITH JOY" on the neck. The other decorations are identical to the large bell.

Before that, the church had two bells until 1853, but they had to be removed because the bell tower had become dilapidated. They were brought to the Johanniskirche and exhibited there at the west entrance in the tower. The St. John's Church was badly damaged in the town fires in 1860 and 1907 and one bell was destroyed each time.
