history

For centuries, Flüren was a small rural village that was administered from Wesel and had neither a Protestant nor a Catholic church. The local Catholics belonged to the parish of St. Martini in the Wesel city center and thus had a long path to the church. With the establishment of the Herz-Jesu-Kirche in the Wesel district of Feldmark , the physical distance to the nearest church was significantly shorter from 1920, but it was still several kilometers.

After the Second World War , Flüren quickly developed from a rural village with a few hundred inhabitants to a suburb of Wesel with several thousand inhabitants. When this development already became apparent in 1952, the first plans to build a Catholic church of their own were drawn up and promoted in February 1953 by the establishment of a church building association. In 1955 the architect Hans Ostermann started planning the building and in 1956 construction began. After a year of construction, the church was consecrated on August 22, 1957 and was named Herz-Mariä-Kirche . In December 1963 the church became a parish rectorate and two years later it became an independent parish after initially belonging to the parish of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In 1964 the adjoining kindergarten and the rectory were completed. The parish hall was inaugurated in June 1969.

In the course of renovations in 1972, the nave and the church tower were considerably enlarged. The church was also the bell of the former Carthusian monastery on the with Flüren am Rhein lying island Grav. This was in the late Middle Ages from Klever Duke and rulers Adolf I. was founded. In 1987, the patronage of the church was changed from "Mariä Herz" to "Maria Königin", which corresponds to the patronage of the historic Carthusian monastery. The church is now simply referred to as St. Marien or Marienkirche. In 2004 the parish ended its independence through a merger with the Sacred Heart congregation and in the following year there was a further merger to form the parish of St. Johannes, based in Bislich . In May 2013 this became part of the St. Nikolaus parish, which includes the nine Catholic churches in the Wesel city area on the right bank of the Rhine.
