history

Postcard with the pre-war church

Originally the church was a stone building from the 13th century, which was surrounded by a cemetery . In the years 1598/1599 the churchyard was relocated because of the plague deaths and leveled in 1777, the area became part of the market.

The brick tower was added in the 14th century and the brick choir was also extended in the same century . It is believed that the Hussites partially destroyed the church in 1432 . It was then restored and rebuilt around 1500 with three aisles and brick-facing. This construction work was completed in 1513. There have been other additions over the years.

The tower burned among other things in the years 1638, 1639, 1664 and 1732. It was rebuilt after each time, got a baroque facade structure and was provided with a Welschen hood . The last repair took place in 1784, until it was destroyed in 1945 only minor repairs were made.

At the end of the Second World War , from April 16 to 20, 1945, the church burned down to the foundation walls due to fighting, and the entire interior was lost. In 1950/1951 the southern choir nave was converted into a chapel. Between 1954 and 1960 the tower was stabilized by four concrete false ceilings.

In April 1991 a development association was formed with the aim of rebuilding the church. Since then, the tower has been renovated, among other things.

The Eastern Regional Convention of the High Church of St. John Brotherhood has been located in the church since 2012 .

description

The building, preserved as a ruin, in the form of an approximately 55-meter-long brick hall church, consists of a three-aisled nave and a three-aisled choir. What have been preserved after the destruction in 1945 are the surrounding walls, the pillars and arcades of the nave, the inner walls of the choir and the rectangular tower with an area of 14 by 9 meters, which had six storeys before the destruction. It has recently been refurbished and was given a flat emergency cover instead of the Welschen hood, which was destroyed in the war.

The southern nave of the choir is now used as a chapel.

Furnishing

In the chapel there is a winged altar from 1951, which, according to the inscription, was made by Alice Brasse-Forstmann . The crucified Christ , Mary and John are depicted in the center. There are two evangelists on each wing .

The old bells are no longer there. In the tower hangs a bell originally from Werblitz (today Wierzbnica) in the former Soldin district, today Myślibórz (Poland) , which may have been cast in 1480.

In the church there is a grave slab made of sandstone from 1681 with a heavily weathered relief, the so-called turning baptism.
