St. Martin in Rendsburg

St. Martin is a Roman Catholic church in Rendsburg in Schleswig-Holstein . It was consecrated on June 4, 1967 and is considered a prime example of modern church building in the 1960s.

history

After the Reformation , masses for the Catholic soldiers stationed in Rendsburg were not permitted again until 1689. Priests from Glückstadt and Friedrichstadt held the services in the house of the Catholic master builder Dominicus Pelli . Rendsburg only received its own Catholic priest in 1871. On September 29, 1874, St. Martin's Church in Eisenbahnstrasse was consecrated . It was the first Catholic church to be built in Schleswig-Holstein after the Reformation. After the Second World War, the neo-Romanesque church became too small for the community, which had grown rapidly due to the large number of refugees. In addition, she threatened to collapse from the vibrations of the road traffic. The parish acquired the property on Herrenstrasse and announced an architectural competition , which Karlheinz Bargholz (1920–2015) won.

Building description

The spatial concept by Karlheinz Bargholz, which took into account the change in direction of the Second Vatican Council , placed the altar freely in a simple chancel . For colored light in the church, the artist Eduard Bargheer designed a glass band of light under the ceiling. The shell roof , which forms a square in the ground plan, proved to be statically and structurally demanding due to the corner point that was pulled down to a height of 3.00 m and the other corner point raised 17.50 m. The tower standing next to the church has the shape of an extremely pointed pyramid. It is covered with stainless steel plates and is 36.90 m high without the cross. Five bells are mounted in it.
