St. Martinus is the Roman Catholic church of Kirchherten , a district of Bedburg ( Rhein-Erft district ) in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

The beginnings of the Church of St. Martinus are not clear. In 1287 Gerhard von Jülich transferred partial patronage to the parish church to the Cologne cathedral chapter. In 1350 the patronage was divided between the cathedral chapter and the Rellinghausen monastery when the church was incorporated into the Cologne cathedral choir. Since the 16th century the patronage was due to the sovereign.

In the 15th century, the Romanesque church of St. Martinus was replaced by a single-nave building in the late Gothic style , which received side aisles in 1513. In 1642 the church was burned down by Weimar-Hessian troops and the nave was rebuilt in the following years. The nave was so dilapidated in 1857 that it was replaced by a three-aisled neo-Gothic basilica while retaining the late-Gothic tower from the 15th century.

When the church was rebuilt, the three-storey tower received an enlarged west portal in the basement. The two upper floors have a fine panel structure with delicate Gothic tracery .
