The ruins at Buttinge 1751

St. Michaël was a late Gothic parish church consecrated to St. Michael the Archangel in the Buttinge peasantry , which today belongs to the municipality of Veere , on Walcheren in the Dutch province of Zeeland . Today only a ruin in the form of a wall part of the choir room bears witness to it.

history

The parish of Buttinge was separated from the St. Pieterskerk in Middelburg before 1249 . Nothing is known about the circumstances of the late Gothic sacred building there. In 1566 the church was badly damaged in the course of the iconoclast during the Reformation . During the Eighty Years WarBetween 1572 and 1574 the building was completely devastated, which ultimately left the church in ruins. As a result, around 1650 the parish sought support and funds from the church administration in Middelburg to restore the church. However, this decided to use the available funds to renovate the church in the neighboring Grijpskerke and to re-parish the Buttingen believers there. These still belong to the local community today. A watercolor from 1751 shows the ruins with the triumphal arch still intact and, in addition to the choir, parts of the nave that are still upright. Today there are only sparse remains of it, which are in private hands in a small landscape park with Mediterranean plants.
