St. Nikolaus is the Roman Catholic parish church of Konz ( Trier-Saarburg district ) in Rhineland-Palatinate .

history

The archbishop of Trier owned the patronage right over the church in Konz in 1323, around 1330 it was mentioned in the Taxa generalis . In 1650 the church received a new nave, in 1725 the episcopal authorities ordered the church to be rebuilt. In 1873, the nave and choir were rebuilt while retaining the Gothic choir tower from the 15th century according to plans by the Luxembourg state architect Arendt. The old three-story tower now stood behind the new choir. The tower was increased by one floor in 1903. The former chancel in the tower has a cross vault with high concave ribs. The keystone shows the coat of arms of Archbishop Johann II of Baden (1456–1503).

From 1959 to 1961, the St. Nikolaus Church was rebuilt according to plans by the Swiss architect Hermann Baur as “God's tent among men”. The basement of the Gothic choir tower is located as a side chapel in the southeast corner of the new church. Under the worship hall there is a crypt with ruins of the Roman imperial villa of Konz , on the remains of which the parish church partially stands.
