St. Pol de Leon

St. Paul de Leon is an Anglican parish church of the Church of England in Staverton, a small town west of Torquay in Devon . The church is classified as a Grade I cultural monument .

history

The church, dedicated to Saint Paulinus Aurelianus , the first bishop of Saint-Pol-de-Léon in Brittany , was built at the beginning of the 14th century. A previous building is said to have been built by the saint himself in Staverton in the 6th century, which was replaced by a new church in Norman times. In 1314, Bishop Stapeldon considered this church to be so dilapidated that it was rebuilt. This Gothic church was largely rebuilt in the 15th century. In 1877 a renovation took place in the style of the Victorian age . The church is a three-aisled structure with a western tower in front. The choir only towers above the aisles to the east by a few meters and is just closing. Access is via a two-storey southern porch.
