Paulinus Aurelianus (also Pol Aurelian , Pol de Léon or simply Paol , * 5th  century , † maybe 6th century ) was a Celtic saint . He is next to Maklou / Breton : Sant Maloù ( Saint-Malo ), Samson von Dol / Breton: Sant Samzun a Zol ( Dol-de-Bretagne ), Brieuc / Breton: Sant Brieg ( Saint-Brieuc ), Tugdual / Breton: Sant Tugdual a Dreger ( Tréguier ), Corentin / Breton: Sant Kaourintin a Gemper ( Quimper ) and Paterne / Breton: Sant Patern a Wened ( Vannes ) one of the seven holy founding bishops of Brittany . His feast day is March 12th .

His hagiography was recorded in 884 by a Breton monk named Wrmonoc. Paulinis was therefore the son of a British chief. Like Samson of Dol , Gildas and David of Menevia , Paulini was a student of St. Hildutus and trained in the Welsh monasteries of Llan Illtyd Vawr (County of Glamorganshire ) and Ynys Pyr .

Paulin founded churches near Llandovery in Dyfed County Carmarthenshire . As early as 518 he founded an abbey called Ty Gwyn (White Church) in Yr Henllwyn (Old Bush) . He probably took part in the synod of Llanddewi Brefi in 545. A stone near the village of Pumpsaint ( Welsh : Five Saints) in Dyfed, Cardiganshire , which dates back to 550, praises him as “the savior of the faith, constant lover of his land”.

Paulinus founded monasteries in Brittany near Lampol , on the Île-d'Ouessant , on the Île-de-Batz (where he later died) and near Ocsimor, today's Saint-Pol-de-Léon in the Finistère department . There he was appointed the first bishop of the city by the Frankish king Childebert I.

Paul's sister was St.  Sidwell of Exeter .
