Chapel of St. Peter and Berlar

A memorial stone of Baron Friedrich von Plettenberg still reminds of the first church building in Berlar , it is located on a meadow (so-called Kreuzmannswiese) between the Meierhof and the Gasthof Niggemann. The year the chapel was built is not known; there is evidence that it has existed since 1697 and was demolished before 1882 due to dilapidation. Friedrich von Plettenberg was buried near the chapel; his grave was found in 1848 during a clean-up.

The foundation stone for today's chapel was laid in 1882. The chapel was built according to plans by the royal government architect Josef Kathol, who was born in Berlar. a. worked in Metz and Dortmund. It was financed through donations from the villagers and donations from the diocese and parish. The chapel congregation had belonged to the parish of St. Margaretha in Ramsbeck since 1862. A sacristy was added in 1951 according to plans by the chief building officer Georg Hanxleden. A lightning strike damaged the tower in 1978 and it was repaired. The building was repainted in 1982. The benches in the former chapel in the Tannenberg Clinic replaced the existing ones. A new wooden floor was put in and the windows were re- leaded . The last renovation that gave the chapel its current appearance was in 1993. A celebration altar was set up in 1997.
