St. Peter and Paul in Žlutice

The Church of St. Peter and Paul (Czech Kostel sv. Petra a Pavla ) in the Czech municipality of Žlutice (German Luditz ) is one of the most important architectural monuments in the Karlovy Vary region .

history

In the foundation of the nave, remains of a previous Romanesque building have been preserved. Today's church building, a three-aisled basilica with a Gothic cross-ribbed vault, was built in the first half of the 14th century. The church of Luditz is mentioned for the first time in 1356 in the confirmation books of the Prague diocese. According to the construction books, the church had had its own priest since around 1375. During the Hussite Wars , the church was largely destroyed by the Taborites in 1422 and restored by Ales von Seeberg in 1427. Count Lorenz Schlick promoted the Reformation and brought the Lutheran theologian Johannes Criginger from Wittenberg to Luditz as court preacher . The former church foundations all ceased to exist during the Hussite Wars and during the Protestant era. The north chapel was built in 1481. From 1536 to around 1597 the south chapel was added. In the 17th century the church was given a partially baroque appearance. On February 26, 1660 the sacristy tower collapsed, the vault of the front part of the nave, the high altar and the stately crypt destroyed. Reconstruction began in 1661 at the expense of the municipality. After a fire in 1779, the church was rebuilt in baroque style, with major repairs carried out in 1910 and in the 1990s. An extensive reconstruction has recently taken place. In addition to Luditz and the suburbs, Groß-Werscheditz, Kowaren, Stadthöfe, Paßnau, Sichlau, Kripau and the wastelands of Raska and Johannesmühle belonged to the parish. In 1930 the parish had 2,732 Catholics.

Furnishing

Fragments of Gothic paintings from the 15th century have been preserved inside the church. A stone baptismal font comes from the Renaissance period. The valuable baroque organ from 1775 was supplied by the organ maker František Prokop Nolli. The family crypt of the knights, barons and counts Kokorowetz von Kokorowa is located under the church. In the 19th century, the bell tower contained three bells from 1570 to 1574, each weighing 100, 50 and 30 hundredweight.
