The Catholic branch church St. Raphael is a church building in List on Sylt , a municipality in the district of North Friesland ( Schleswig-Holstein ). It is the most northerly catholic church in Germany and belongs to the island parish of St. Christophorus in Westerland. The community belongs to the Archdiocese of Hamburg . Divine Missionaries look after the church. It was originally intended as a place of worship for the naval members stationed on Sylt, which were withdrawn in 2006.

History and architecture

The federal government largely financed the construction. The free-standing tower is crowned with a figure of the Archangel Raphael, who serves as a weather vane. Hansen and Schlums acted as architects after their 1st prize in the architectural competition. Bishop Ludwig Averkamp consecrated the diaspora church in 1988. The patron saint Raphael is also venerated as the patron saint of shipmen.

The clinker masonry divides the altar wall and the arms, which are open on both sides and which connect as wall parts. The masonry support and tree motifs are intended to give the impression of a Haines. Emil Wachter was in charge of this work . The altar is made of clinker bricks, the tabernacle is decorated with a bronze relief. The Easter candlestick and the bronze altar candlesticks complete the equipment. The outer masonry is loosened up with the Raphael mosaic and an emblem in the gable showing a triangle and a circle.

window

The windows were made by the glass art workshops in Karlsruhe according to Wachter's plans. The two figurative windows show the story of Raphael and Tobias, they are kept in rich red and blue tones. There is a light band with simple graphic elements above the organ gallery. The light is subdued, but sufficient.

Relics

The relics of Franz von Assisi by Arnold Janssen from the mothers Josefa and Maria are set in the clinker brick altar . The relics of the demolished or profane churches of St. Christopher, St. Josef and Stella Maris are walled in together with a document.
