St. Raphael is a Roman Catholic church in Wuppertal - Langerfeld . The church belongs to the parish of St. Raphael / St. Paul.

history

The predecessor of the church is a St. Raphael chapel, which was built on what was then Kirschbaumstrasse . The foundation stone was laid on July 15, 1882, and the chapel was inaugurated on October 15, 1884. At that time, the community had around 500 members. Since the community did not have its own pastor, a clergyman from the Schwelm mother community held a church service on Sundays and public holidays. On April 15, 1894, at that time the congregation had around 1,800 members, Vicar Bernhard Rasche was the first independent clergyman to become pastor of the congregation on May 28, 1899. Rasche left the community in 1903 and was appointed to a seminary in Paderborn, his successor was Franz Niggetiet. He mobilized the congregation, which forced the planning to build a larger church.

The church of St. Raphael was built in November 1911 between Insel - and Henkelsstraße , the plans for the church as a replica in the early Gothic style were made by Richard Jacob Fischer (1870–1928 son of Gerhard August Fischer ). The foundation stone was laid on October 24, 1909, the inauguration ceremony on November 5 and November 12, 1911.

The interior of the church was renovated in 1953, the church tower was not expanded until 1959, and it was fitted with six bells. Peter Hecker created the choir window in 1955, as did the windows in the side aisles. They represent the first and last arrival of Jesus Christ. The sculpture of Our Lady with the Child (or Sedes sapientiae ) from 1958, which is in the chancel on the right, was made by Kurt Zimmermann .

In 1971 the exterior of the church was restored and it was built as the second church in the parish of St. Paul. Another renovation took place in the interior in 1975. At the end of 1979 four figures of saints by the Limburg artist and sculptor Karl Matthäus Winter were placed around the chancel.

On May 13, 1994 the church was recognized as a monument.
