St. Sebastian in Berlichingen

St. Sebastian is a Roman Catholic church in Berlichingen , a district of the community Schöntal in Hohenlohekreis in Baden-Württemberg .

history

A church in Berlichingen was mentioned when Berlichingen was first mentioned in the year 800. The original burial place of the place was around the church. The church in Berlichingen was originally a branch church of Bieringen and became independent in the 13th century at the latest. The right of patronage lay with the Schöntal Monastery , so that the church remained Old Believers at the time of the Reformation . From the 17th century onwards, members of the Schöntal monastery provided the parish.

The tower of the current building goes back to a new church built in 1629 by Abbot Sigismund Fichtlin . In 1812 a new cemetery was laid out on the outskirts so that burials ended around the church.

From 1843 the church was renewed in its present form, whereby the church tower and chancel of the old church were preserved. The new building was ceremoniously consecrated in 1849.

The church was badly damaged in the Second World War during the battle for Berlichingen on April 6 and 7, 1945. The tower was set on fire. Pastor Kilian Nuss, parish nurse Bernhard Birkert and a French prisoner of war were only able to extinguish the fire with great difficulty and prevent the whole church from burning down. The organ, damaged by a shell impact, was repaired in 1948. In the following year, the tower received a new slate roof and many other damages were repaired, so that services could be celebrated in the church again for the 100th anniversary of the consecration. In 1952 two new bells were purchased. An extensive interior renovation took place in 1954.

In 1962 the church received heating, in 1964 new stalls and the sacristy extension, and in 1965 new colored glass windows. In 1966 the retaining wall around the church was renewed. In 1967 the exterior was renovated, and in 1968 more new colored windows were added for the west side of the church. In 1973 the church received a new organ, in 1976 a new spire and in 1977 a modified gallery. In 1984 a new exterior renovation followed, in 1992 another interior renovation.
