history

founding

The founding date of the St. Sebastianus Schützenbruderschaft Duisburg-Huckingen is no longer known today. The oldest evidence is a plaque on the old royal silver, which shows the year 1687 in addition to the name Andist Brockerhoff . In the absence of other reliable sources, 1687 is generally considered to be the year the brotherhood was founded. This makes it one of the oldest in the Rhineland.

However, the fraternity statutes provide information on the origin. In §2 it says: "The funeral society established in 1687 merged in 1826 as the St. Sebastianus Rifle Brotherhood." Such a funeral society is an ecclesiastical brotherhood, which z. B. cared for nursing or poor relief and arranged for an orderly burial of their members.

In addition, on the occasion of the celebration of the centenary of the brotherhood in 1926, the festival magazine reported on a rifle guild . Such guilds often emerged as early as the 13th century and guarded and protected the respective localities. An annual bird shooting was often combined with a folk festival. It is therefore assumed that the Huckinger Brotherhood was formed as a union of the rifle guild and the church brotherhood.

Another story

In 1829, when it was re-established, the brotherhood consisted of 132 members. Interestingly, the rules for bird shooting explicitly stipulated from the outset that no distinctions should be made with regard to religious affiliation. However, a commitment to the Christian faith was a prerequisite for membership. In other words, no distinction was made between Catholic and Protestant faith. Central elements of brotherhood life were the titular festival and the shooting festival. The titular feast on January 20th began with a service. Then they met for the annual general meeting. As an application to the mayor from 1858 shows, the shooting festival was already celebrated at the end of August.

In 1833 a bird pole was set up on the property of the rifle brother W. Becker. Bird shooting should take place there for the next 40 years.

The first presidents after the re-establishment were:

Years president
1826-1845 Johann Ingelberg
1845-1849 Joh. Heinrich Schmitz
1849-1864 Jakob Theodor Franconia
1864-1865 Heinrich Schallbroch

The king's star , an order to commemorate his term of office, had been given to the king since at least 1847. From 1874 at the latest there was a dress code for the pageants. All rifle brothers had to appear in a "dark suit with a top hat" or "rifle suit".

In 1876 the brotherhood had 196 members. From 1882 at the latest, there was coffee for the women on the afternoon of the titular festival, to which the rifle brothers followed in the evening, as is still customary today. In 1885 the brotherhood had its first general in Michel Dahmen.

The First World War prevented the shooting festivals in the years 1914–1918. Only in 1919 was another shooting festival celebrated.

In 1956 the members of the brotherhood donated a figure of St. Sebastian, which was consecrated in the parish church of St. Peter and Paul in Huckingen and can still be seen there today.

Today's structure

The association currently has around 390 members who are organized in the following nine companies:

  • The officer corps was founded in the 19th century. The exact year of foundation is not known. A re-establishment took place after the Second World War in 1946. They provide the highest-ranking officer, the company officers, the command leader and the flag officer and are responsible for the seating and table decoration.
  • The Rifle Company (founded in 1687) is one of the oldest companies in our brotherhood. In this company all passive and active rifle brothers are together. Once a year this company also shoots out its company kings.
  • The Jäger Company was founded on October 21, 1966. It is a closed force that is available for all work, u. a. also the annual construction of the shooting house for bird shooting.
  • The St. Hubertus Company was founded in the autumn of 1971 from the ranks of the Jungschützen.
  • The St. Sebastianus Company was founded in 1975. Almost all members came from the Jungschützen. It provides members of the advisory board, the festival committee, the festival committee, rifle carnival and shooting director as well as the king and chief adjudicators.
  • The St. Peter & Paul Company was founded in 1983 from the ranks of the Jungschützen. She has been organizing the Spring Festival for several years, is responsible for the flower arrangements in the marquee and decorates the Christmas market.
  • The Ernestine Company was founded in 2003 by 6 young women between the ages of 16 and 23 years. Its roots lie in the Ernestine girls' group, which was founded in 1976 and is part of the Jungschützen department.
  • The Jungschützen Company was founded in 1955. It includes members aged 15 to 25.
  • The student protection company was founded in 1970. The St. Peter and Paul Company, the Ernestine Women's Company and the Jungschützen in their current form emerged from them. The school shooters are divided into four different age groups (and partly according to boys and girls).

The association's management is formed by a president (1st brother master), a 2nd chairman, the Rendanten (treasurer), the 2nd treasurer and a 1st and a 2nd secretary. There is also an advisory board consisting of elected and functional advisory board members. The latter are the spiritual praeses (at the same time pastors of the Catholic parish of St. Peter and Paul ), the reigning king, the reigning prince, the general, the shooting master and representatives of individual companies / departments.

The brotherhood also has a team that takes part in round competitions. She shoots in the area class in which 15 shots are placed on target (10 mirror) in a total shooting time of 27.5 minutes. The brotherhood has a shooting range in the Huckinger Steinhof .

Activities & services

Club life is shaped by a variety of activities. In addition to the two highlights of the shooting year, the patronage festival and the shooting festival, this includes the following activities:

  • Participation in the parish procession and services for the living and deceased of the brotherhood
  • Alignment of the rifle carnival
  • Various women outings
  • Sports activities with the school shooters (e.g. football, mini golf , table tennis, swimming, ice skating)
  • School rifle trips (e.g. youth hostels, pony farms, amusement parks, Sauerland)
  • Common Advent celebrations
  • Organization of the Christmas market

Even today the association pays the death grants for members and takes part in the funerals of members. Here the origin is shown as a corpse society .
