The Church of St. Peter and Paul is a listed, neo-Gothic sacral building from the late 19th century. The church is located in the Duisburg district of Huckingen on the corner of Raiffeisenstraße and Albertus-Magnus-Straße and houses the Catholic community of Huckingen . The church bears the patronage of St. Peter and Paul .

building

As a neo-Gothic building, the church is characterized by the high, pointed-arched windows, the stepped buttresses, a slim crossing tower and a dominant church tower. It was built from field fire bricks as a three-aisled pillar basilica on the site of the previous church.

history

The reason for the construction of the new church was the poor condition of the old church and an urgent need for expansion, as the Huckingen parish was responsible for a comparatively large region in the middle of the 19th century, which was characterized by a steadily increasing population due to advancing industrialization. In addition to Huckingen, this also included the then much more sparsely populated districts of Buchholz including Eichelskamp, Großenbaum , Wedau and Bissingheim .

Josef Schrey from Duisburg, who is named in the Duisburg address book from 1878 as an architect, bricklayer and master carpenter, was responsible for the planning and construction management. The foundation stone was laid on May 24, 1877. In 1878 the shell of the first construction phase, the high choir and crossing with the transept, was completed.

A crack was discovered in one of the crossing piers during construction. An iron ring was placed around the round pillar by order of the Archbishop's Authority in Cologne. After further static calculations and findings that the pillars were not buckling resistant, four iron pipes (possibly also massive iron pillars) were finally placed around the four stone pillars. They were connected with an iron ring at the head and foot.

After several interruptions, the building of the church was completed in June 1893 with the nave and tower. The latter could only be completed with a donation from Count Franz von Spee . The first mass was celebrated on Christmas 1893. The consecration took place in 1902.

The church survived the Second World War largely undamaged. Only the windows were affected by the fragmentation effect of the artillery fire. Only a single window on the south side remained intact. Temporary glass panels that were installed after the war had to be replaced with new windows. Interior plaster and paint were also renewed. Individual donors and church associations covered the costs.

Shortly after the war, on April 30, 1946, the church council decided to purchase new steel bells, which were consecrated in the church on February 16, 1947 in the names of Peter, Paul, Maria and Joseph. The steel bells, in turn, were exchanged for 5 bronze bells in 1955, which were consecrated on December 16, 1955 in the names of Petrus, Paulus, Maria, Josef and Michael.

In 2012 and 2013, the organ builder Uwe Renard installed a new organ in the gallery for 160,000 euros. The 6.5 meter high, new organ case and the console were prefabricated in the organ builder's workshop in Kevelaer . The organ from 1979 and comprising 21 registers was purchased in 2009 for 20,000 euros from the former, now closed parish of St. Raphael in Essen-Bergerhausen . During installation, a medium-high trumpet was retrofitted and two stops from the first Huckinger organ from 1909 were taken over. In addition, three bass registers of the immediate predecessor organ from 1956 were built in, so that the organ now has 27 registers with 1790 pipes.
