St. Valentin am Friedhof, interior

The church of St. Valentin am Friedhof is located just outside the town of Tramin in South Tyrol ( Italy ) directly on the Wine Route. It has served as a cemetery church since 1797 . The patron saint of the church is Saint Valentine of Rome .

St. Valentin is a hall church of Romanesque origin with a choir tower above the former apse . During the Gothic extension in 1380, the church was not vaulted, but rather retained its Romanesque character with a wooden flat ceiling and high walls. These offered large wall surfaces for extensive fresco cycles. The wall paintings were created between 1380 and 1420. Depicted are the Ursula legend and the Passion of Christ , one of the most detailed depictions of the Passion from around 1400 in Tyrol. Next to the simple stone altar table is a large-scale depiction of the Annunciation on a pillar .
