history

View of the nave

At the location of today's collegiate church there was probably already a church under the Merovingians. The church was destroyed by the Normans and restored before 957 at the instigation of Archbishop Bruno of Cologne. The construction of the large Romanesque basilica to house the relics of St. Vincent began in the first quarter of the 11th century. First the west building and the choir with the transept were completed. It was consecrated in 1160. From 1180, the nave and side aisles were built. The original shape of the wall templates on the side aisle walls are characterized by the art historian Harald Busch as “an echo of Carolingian architecture” (p. 265). The west tower with its small side towers was partially sheathed in the 13th century.

The collegiate foundation was abolished in 1797.
