St. Wonnow Church

St. Wonnow is an Anglican parish church of the Church in Wales in Wonastow, a small town southwest of Monmouth in Wales . The church has been classified as a Grade II * cultural monument since 1953 .

history

The church, consecrated to the Breton Saint Guénolé (English Winwaloe , in the local abrading St. Wonnow) is located at a location where the first church is said to have been built as early as the 7th century. The foundation may go back to missionary work by Landévennec Abbey in the region. Today's house of worship dates back to the 12th century, but appears as the result of fundamental restoration work by the owner of the Wonastow Court manor to the west , Sir William Baronet of Chevet, in 1863/65. The north porch was added in 1909 by Arthur Grove. The compact impression of the church building is created by the short nave, which is joined by a rectangular choir of the same length.
