St. Wynwallow (Landewednack)
St. Wynwallow is an Anglican parish church of the Church of England in Landewednack, a small town north of Lizard Point in Cornwall . The church has been classified as a Grade I Cultural Monument since 1984 and is considered the southernmost church building in mainland Britain.
history
The parish church, consecrated to the Breton Saint Guengalaenus , dates back to the 11th century in its oldest parts with the Norman south portal . Guengalaenus was abbot of Landévennec Abbey . The place name Landewednack is a local variation of the name of the abbey.
The nave, choir, southern transept and the southern porch of the church were built in the late 13th and early 14th centuries. The tower goes back to an older building, but got its shape in the early 15th century. Finally, at the beginning of the 16th century, the five-bay north aisle was added. Renovation work took place in 1860/62 and in the 1920s.
