St Columbkille's Roman Catholic Church

The St Columbkille's Roman Catholic Church is a Roman Catholic church building in the Scottish town of Rutherglen in the Council Area South Lanarkshire . In 1992 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

In 1851 the parish was established. She used a church near the present day. With the arrival of Irish immigrants and internal immigration from the Highlands , the building no longer offered enough space for the growing community in the 1930s. It was decided to build a new church with 600 seats. Based on a design by Gillespie, Kidd & Coia , today's St Columbkille's Roman Catholic Church was built between 1934 and 1940. In the same year it was consecrated.

description

St Columbkille's Church is located at the confluence of Kirkwood Street and Main Street in the north of Rutherglen. The brickwork of the elongated red brick church is partly set off with natural stone . On the street side, there is a serious and solid-looking facade with five arched recesses with elongated, narrow windows. Wooden portals are embedded on the outer and central axis. Above the arches, five sculptures by Archibald Dawson depict Christ and the four evangelists in recesses. The side facades are complex. The arched windows, some of which are coupled in triplets, show inspiration from Romanesque architecture . The narrow, short transept is rather indicated. A slate-covered gable roof sits on it.
