The St Conan's Church , and St Conan's Kirk , is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the small Scottish village Lochawe . The building sits over the banks of Loch Awe , which is off the A85 that connects Oban with Perth . In 1971 St Conan's Church was included in the Scottish Monument Lists in the highest category A. The church is still in use as such today.

history

The building was built according to plans by Walter Douglas Campbell , who was not a professional architect and was the brother of Archibald Campbell, 1st Baron Blythswood . The background for the construction of the church was allegedly that Campbell wanted to spare his mother, who also financed the construction, the daily trip to the church in Dalmally and to build a church closer by. After construction began in 1881, the first phase of construction was finally completed in 1886. The building at that time was rather simple and of significantly smaller dimensions than it is today, but still sufficient for the small community in the sparsely populated area on the north bank of Loch Awe. Between 1907 and his death in 1914, Campbell expanded the building. The work was then continued by his sister until her death in 1927. The expansions started were completed by order in 1930.
