history

According to tradition, it is an early Christian site in Scotland. Drostan , a pupil of Columban , is said to have built a chapel there in the 6th century. The earliest written evidence is an entry in the Register of St Andrews Priory , made between 1034 and 1055 under Malduin , Bishop of St Andrews . The church tower still preserved today was built around the year 1200. In 1243, Bishop David de Bernham consecrated the church. There are conflicting reports as to whether de Bernham the church Drostan and John the Baptist ordained or only the latter.

Prior John Hepburn presumably initiated the early 16th century revisions. In the last quarter of the 17th century the Drostanskirche was expanded. It was also covered with slate for the first time. Due to the poor condition of the church, an application was made to rebuild it in 1786. Since the records do not continue until 1788, it seems possible that construction dragged on until this year. For this reason, it is also doubtful whether Thomas Barclay , who expanded the associated rectory during the same period , planned the measure. In 1800 people expressed concern about the condition of the bell tower and applied for a new building due to the risk of collapse. This was carried out between 1807 and 1810. The total cost was £ 200. Since the newly fitted pointed helmet was rated as a step forward, since it opposes a smaller area to the wind than a cuboid, it can be assumed that the previous tower end was not a pointed helmet. One bell was replaced in 1815, while the tower clocks are from 1839. Although records date the installation of the Gillespie & Scott organ to 1923, it seems certain that 1913 is meant. The interior was also redesigned during the same period.
