description

St Laurence's Church is at the intersection of Ingleston Street and Kilmacolm Road southeast of downtown Greenock. It was built between 1951 and 1954. The design comes from the renowned architecture firm Gillespie, Kidd & Coia , which is responsible for numerous Roman Catholic sacred buildings in the Archdiocese of Glasgow and the Diocese of Paisley . The style of the building is based on Scandinavian church buildings. The masonry consists of red brick and details of sandstone . The saddle roof is covered with slate shingles. The building consists of an elongated nave with narrow aisles. Numerous elements take up the triangle as a motif. A massive triangle emerges on the gable side above the entrance area. The windows along the main nave are triangular and arranged on ten vertical axes. At the west end there is a short transept with a flat roof . The covers of the ventilation system with their octagonal caps are striking.
