St Leonards School

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

St Leonards School , formerly St Leonards and St Katherines School , is an independent boarding school founded by professors from St Andrews University in the 19th century. The boarding school is located in the center of the small town of St Andrews ( Fife ) on the east coast of Scotland, south of its historic cathedral . It is surrounded by the walls of a medieval monastery.

General

It was originally founded in 1877 by professors from St Andrews University in response to the growing need for academic education for women. Today, on the other hand, St Leonards is a mixed boarding school for boys and girls, where students between the ages of four and 19 are taught. In 2005 the Sunday Times named St Leonards Scottish Independent School of the Year. There are currently around 530 students between the ages of 4 and 19 being taught at the school, and the proportion of female and male boarding school students is now evenly balanced. St Leonards is the only school in the country whose upper school system has been completely converted to the International Abitur ( IB Diploma Program ). It was also one of the first Scottish boarding schools to offer the international high school diploma.

history

Dame Louisa Lumsden was named first headmistress in 1877. The school's motto was that "a girl should receive exactly the same education as her brother, if not better". In 1999 boys were admitted to St Leonards High School and St Katharines Elementary School for the first time. Soon after, the entire school became a uniform boarding school for boys and girls.

St Katharines and St Leonards-New Park

St Katharines School was an on-board elementary school that was also on the closed campus and prepared students for middle and high school. In March 2002, St Katharines School moved to the main building and was renamed St Leonards Junior and Middle School. It merged with New Park School in March 2005, renamed St Leonards New Park and finally St Leonards Junior School in June 2011. At the same time, a £ 2,500,000 renovation program for the junior school was started, including the expansion of existing parts of the building.

St Leonards School

The school, like many other British boarding schools, offers a wide range of sports. The school has several squash and tennis courts, as well as rugby and soccer fields and an indoor swimming pool. The school has had a partnership with St Andrews Golf Club for several years, which enables students to play there on special terms.

lacrosse

The school is considered to be the place of origin of lacrosse , which is said to have been invented there. Female boarding school students continue the lacrosse tradition at the school today. Recent successes include winning the Scottish U15 Championship in 2009 and reaching the finals of the UK Small Schools' Tournament in 2009, 2010 and 2011, which will be played on the fields of Rendcomb College in Gloucestershire.

Board

The boarding school administration is supervised by a selected unit of the citizens of the city of St Andrews. This body makes the essential financial and personnel-related decisions, such as the election of the school head.
