St Peter's Kirk

The St Peter's Kirk is a Presbyterian church building on the Scottish Orkney island Mainland . In 1977 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists, initially in category B. The upgrade to the highest category A took place in 1998.

history

At the site of the church there was at least one previous building, also a St. Peter's Church. It was built around 1670. Its condition was described as ruinous as early as 1736. The roof had largely collapsed and the masonry turned out to be too badly damaged to support a new roof. In 1835 an application was submitted to rebuild the church based on a design by William G. Watt . Today's St Peter's Kirk was built in 1836 on the foundations of the old church. The cost of construction was around £ 634. In 1875 damage was repaired for around £ 204. There is a newspaper report from 1906 that depicts a cross plate lying in the surrounding cemetery as the oldest gravestone in West Mainland, which could have been from the time of the early missionaries. In 1967 regular services were still held in St Peter's Kirk. The building was restored at the beginning of the 2000s. This work was awarded the Europa Nostra Prize in 2003. Today the church is only occasionally used for church services.

description

The elongated church building is isolated near the west coast of Mainland on the Bay of Skaill . It is considered a rare and largely preserved example of a rural parish church from the 1830s. There are two arched windows on the south side and one on both gable sides. The facades are plastered. The building ends with a slate-covered gable roof . A small bell tower sits on the western gable.
