history

The establishment of the Academy of Arts of Georgia on March 8, 1922 was based on the decision of the People's Commissariat for Education. In this early period four faculties were founded: painting, sculpture, graphics and architecture, and in 1927 the faculty of ceramic art was added.

The private art school of the Georgian artist Mose Toidze, also opened in 1922, was intended as preparation for university studies. The art academy immediately formed the center of the Georgian art scene, and a large number of renowned artists were employed as teaching staff. The first professors were: Gigo Gabashvili, Iakob Nikoladse , Jewgeni Lansere , Joseph Sharlemagne, Henryk Hryniewski, Egishe Tatevosyan, Nikolay Sklifosovskiy, Nicholas Antadze, Anatoli Kalgin, Nikolay Severove , Dimitri Shevardnadevi, Michael Machavariani, Alexander Pitskanashauri Mose Toidze, Alexander Tsimakuridze, Nicholas Kandelaki, Valerian Sidamon-Eristavi, David Kakabadze, Lado Gudiaschwili , Giorgi Sesiashvili, Ucha Japaridze, Shalva Amiranashvili, Apolon Kutateladze, Valentin Shukhaev, Shota Kroitsadzeadze, David Tsroitsadze, Silvan, Shota Kroitsadzeadze, Silvan Lado Grigolia. building

The academy has been located in the former city palace of the Arshakuni family since 1922. The main building was designed by the architect G. Ivanov as early as 1856. The majority of the halls and interiors were designed in the Qajar style by an Iranian builder working in Tbilisi. In the building complex there was also a hall of mirrors until 1937, it served as Maria Perini's ballet studio. This dancer was the wife of the artist Henryk Hryniewski, who also had a studio in the house. The studio of the academy professor Gigo Gabashvili, the apartment of the Kobulashvili family and other rooms were spread over the floors of the house.

In 1972 a new ten-story house was built as an extension behind the old main building (architects: A. Kurdiani, M. Chkhikvadze, L. Sumbadze, D. Kajaia). It was renovated in 2005-06 with the financial contribution of “Cartu-Bank”.
