The state vocational school for wood sculptors in Bischofsheim in the Rhön is a state-recognized vocational school . It is located at the foot of the Kreuzberg in the Rhön and is Lower Franconia's smallest vocational school.

history

Founded in 1852 as a wood carving school by the Central Polytechnic Association in Würzburg , the institution then served to anchor the commercially oriented craft of carving as an economic extra income in the Rhön farmers' world. The Lower Franconia district's school was closed in 1969 due to the drop in student numbers. Re-established in the autumn of 1973 by the Rhön-Grabfeld district based in Bad Neustadt / Saale, the then rector Philipp Mendler created the basis for a fully functional school that was also able to take account of artistic development. A considerable number of artists in the catchment area of the teaching of Professor Hans Wimmer , the former professor of sculpture at the Nuremberg Art Academy , could be brought to Bischofsheim through Mendler's contacts. Since then, the basic artistic teaching in the field of sculptural work has been closely interlinked with the necessary attention to the technology of wood. The associated daily confrontation with nature and the reality of art, material dialogue and self-assertion of the design motifs suits today's student type at this school very much. Schoolchildren started as trainees in order to take on the challenges of their teachers in all-day full-time lessons over a period of three years. At the end of this time, the performance level of the young wood sculptors is shown through an in-house final examination, including a thesis.

concept

The concept was developed with a view to the requirements of a modern curriculum. This means:

  • Find and use display options for wood.
  • Transform and apply motifs and content into the characteristics typical of wood.
Using the means of sculpture, erect structures in wood that are appropriate to form and material.
Taking up the challenges of artistic creation in order to experience the rhythmic dialectic of spirit and material that occurs, so that the students feel an attitude they have found for themselves as part of the joy of life in the professional realization of a sculptor.

Guidelines

The FSO also works outdoors

It depends on,

  • To closely interlink the basic artistic theory with the necessary attention to the technology of wood and the associated technical application, understood in the work result by the student.
  • In everyday school life, it means for a student, a teacher, to take up the confrontation with regard to a natural specification with the search for an artistic reality. These two components are perceived and implemented in a work in visual language.
  • Material dialogue and self-assertion aim at increasing the student's competence, leading to the appointment of a sculptor

Training goals

According to Art. 13 of the Bavarian Law on Education and Instruction (BayEUG), the vocational school is a school which, without requiring vocational training, serves to prepare for a job or vocational training and promotes general education. The apprenticeship period at the Bavarian wood carving schools lasts three years with full-time lessons all week. Basic knowledge of the German language, both spoken and written, is part of any professional training. The networking of general educational subjects such as German and social studies with the offers of specialist teaching is supported by modern data processing. A stylistic observation of works of architecture and sculpture enables a history-conscious orientation. The drawing of fonts complements the basic theory for a three-dimensional design. Real forms of objects should be represented and read in an explainable manner using construction drawings. This gives the students access to value-conscious design.

In addition to acquiring a technician in the use of sculpting tools, the students learn knowledge, skills and abilities to enter into a dialogue with form and material.

In the case of individual project work, learning areas are touched on, which make the goals for their own actions understandable for the students. This requires consultation within the school staff. This intention is illustrated using the example of an annual plan:

Annual planning of the 11th grade (2nd grade)
