The State University Nikolai Lobachevsky Nizhny Novgorod ( Russian Нижегородский государственный университет им. Лобачевского Nischegorodskij gossudarstwennyj uniwersitet in Lobatschewskogo shortly ННГУ) was born on 31 January 1916 (according to the Gregorian calendar established). It bears the name of the mathematician Nikolai Ivanovich Lobachevsky, who was born in Nizhny Novgorod .

From 1932 to 1990, analogous to the renaming of the city, it was named Gorky State University (Горьковский государственный университет). The university is one of the largest employers in Nizhny Novgorod after the Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Sawod and the Russian Railways .

In 2012, the university , which was recognized as a research university in 2009, had around 35,000 students, including 1,000 PhD students, and 16 faculties. The main research areas include a. GPU computing , physical technology, and genetics.
