The State University of Tula ( Russian Ту́льский госуда́рственный университе́т / abbreviated ТулГУ ) is one of two universities in the central Russian city of Tula . It was founded in 1930 and today has around 17,000 students.
history
Today's university was founded on April 30, 1930 as the Tula Mechanical Institute ( Ту́льский механи́ческий институ́т, ТМИ ) and began teaching in October of the same year with only 240 students. At that time, the university had a purely technical specialization and was primarily intended to prepare junior staff for the Tula metal and armaments industry. At that time, she had hardly any rooms of her own and no student dormitories. Its own infrastructure could only be built up over the years, not least with the help of leading Moscow universities.
During the Second World War , teaching had to be interrupted for a few months when the German Wehrmacht was able to penetrate close to the city and most of the university's students and lecturers had to be drafted into the army. It was not until 1943 that teaching could be fully resumed.
In the post-war period, the institute increased its range of courses considerably over the years, including the establishment of a faculty for mining and several new chairs in the field of military technology. In 1963, by decision of the Ministry of Education of the RSFSR , the university merged with the Tula Mining Institute, established ten years earlier, and at the same time received the official name of Tula Polytechnic Institute ( Ту́льский политехни́ческий институ́т, ТПИ ). This means that the institute already has 24 chairs in a total of nine faculties.
On December 7, 1992, the institute was given the status of a technical university by decision of the Russian Ministry of Education . At the same time, at the beginning of the 1990s, the university's educational offerings were again significantly expanded, including the humanities and natural sciences, and for the first time also bachelor and master degrees. Due to the addition of non-technical teaching content to the university's offering, it was given the status of a full university in 1995 and has officially been called its current name since July 11, 1995.
