The State University of Film and Television Arts Saint Petersburg ( Russian Санкт-Петербургский государственный университет кино и телевидения ) in 1918 as a college for photography and photographic technique in what was then Petrograd founded and is considered the oldest technical film school.

From 1920 a chair for cinematography was established, followed by one for sound engineering . From 1930 the name was changed to the Leningrad Institute of Film Technology .

The continuous development of the university can also be explained by the fact that after Moscow were the largest studios in Leningrad, Lenfilm survived the revolution, war (in Samarkand ) and perestroika .

In 1998 the university received university status and its current name.

For comparison: The State German Technical School for Optics and Photo Technology in Berlin (today in Faculty VIII of the Beuth University of Technology Berlin ) took place in 1919, the Parisian École Louis-Lumière was founded in 1926. The Institute for Cinematography , also founded in 1919, is the oldest art school in this field.
