The State Museum of Oriental Art (Russian Государственный музей искусства народов Востока , Gossudarstwennyj Musej Isskusstwa Narodow Wosstoka even Государственный музей Востока , State Museum of the Orient , abbreviated Музей Востока , the East Museum ) is an art museum in Moscow . Its collection of the art of Asia , the Caucasus and the northern peoples of Russia is the largest in Russia with over 160,000 works. The collection also includes Nikolai and Svyatoslav Roerich's collection . The museum is located in the historic Luninych Cathedral , 12A Nikitsky Boulevard.

history

That on October 30, 1918 under the name Ars Asiatikum ( Iskusstvo Azii ); The museum founded in 1925 was renamed Gosudarstvennyj muzej vostochnych kul'tur , in 1962 it was renamed Gosudarstvennyj muzej iskusstva narodov Vostoka . The name Gosudarstvennyj muzej Vostoka has also been used since 1992 . From 1926 the museum undertook its own archaeological expeditions for scientific research and the expansion of the collection. Starting in 1929, it began shopping trips through the Soviet Far East .

Permanent exhibitions are: Korean Art , Chinese Art , Japanese Art , Art of Southeast Asia ( Vietnam , Burma , Laos , Thailand , Cambodia , Indonesia ), Caucasian Art, Iranian Art, Indian Art , Kazakh Art, Art of Mongolia , Buryatia and Tibet , Art of the Northern Peoples, Painting of the Caucasus and Soviet Central Asia, Life and Works of Nikolai and Svyatoslav Roerich.

Temporary exhibitions often present modern artists who forge relationships with classical Asian art.
