The State Central Museum of Contemporary History of Russia ( Gossudarstwenny Zentralny musei sowremennoi istorii Rossii , wiss. Transliteration Gosudarstvennyj central'nyj muzej sovremennoj istorii Rossii ) is a museum in Moscow , Russia . It is considered one of the largest museums of modern history in the world. The museum building is a classical building from the late 18th century . Between 1831 and 1917 the building was used by the English Club Moscow. Since 1917 it housed the Revolutionary Museum of the USSR (Музей революции Союза ССР). Sergei Ivanovich Mitskewitsch was its first director. Jakub Ganezki , who was executed in 1937 as part of the Stalin purges , was one of his successors from 1936 . In 1998 the museum was renamed the State Central Museum of Contemporary History of Russia . The address is: 21 Tverskaya Street .
