The State Prize for creative handicrafts was a personal design state prize of the Republic of Austria , in which "outstanding achievements in the field of handcrafted and artistically designed products" were awarded.

The award was presented by the Austrian. Economy Ministry announced, from the Austrian. Austrian Federal Economic Chamber , Section Trade doped (7,000 euros) and the Austrian Institute for shaping organized (Austrian Design Institute), which also published the annual catalog (in German and English). The prize was awarded from 1989 to 1996.

From 2001, as a successor to this State Prize and the State Prize for Design, which was awarded at the same time until 1997, the Adolf Loos State Prize for Design was introduced, which continues the State Prize for creative craft in the category "product design of consumer goods".

Awards and winners

Craftsmen with a trade license and freelance artists were eligible to participate, provided that they both designed and manufactured the submitted items.

In addition to the state prize, special prizes were awarded from the federal states in which the final event took place (Salzburg, Tyrol, Vienna), plus 5 awards per year.

The winners of the State Prize for Creative Crafts were:

  • 1989: Franz Forster (blacksmith), for a metal sculpture "Stele";
  • 1990: Georg Kiffmann (metal designer), for a shop shelf;
  • 1991: Maria Baumgartner (ceramist), for a ceramic object "Vase Dreipass";
  • 1992: Josef Wallinger (furniture designer), for a piece of furniture "children's table";
  • 1993: Claudia Schobesberger (metal designer), for a mobile bar "barfly";
  • 1994: Johann R. Rainer (ceramist and Hafner), for his furnace system "Synthesis I"
  • 1995: Kurt Foit (wood sculptor, furniture designer), for the piece of furniture "Cabinet with roll lock";
  • 1996: Wolfgang Schmidinger & Helmut Galler (furniture designers), for the "ladies desk" piece of furniture;
