Maria Baumgartner (born March 13, 1952 in Königswiesen , Upper Austria) is an Austrian ceramic artist and art college teacher.
Live and act
Maria Baumgartner studied from 1972 to 1979 at the University of Artistic and Industrial Design Linz and graduated in 1980 with a diploma in ceramics (with Günter Praschak ) and the title Mag.a art . In 1980 she founded her studio near Lienz (East Tyrol) and worked there as a freelance ceramic artist until 2014 . From 1986 until the end of 2014 she also worked as an assistant, lecturer (from 1998) and professor (from 2000) at the University of Artistic and Industrial Design Linz , where she joined the Ao in 2002 . University Professor of Ceramics has been appointed. Since 2015 her studio and residence have been in Puchenau near Linz and in Tyros on the Peloponnese , where she has been working as a freelance artist ever since.
Maria Baumgartner between 2004 (after the retirement of the owner of professorship ceramic Günter Praschak (1972-2004) and to the appointment of Frank Louis (2008) as Professor of Ceramics) master class pottery and the study of ceramics at the art University of and industrial design Linz managed on an interim basis.
She has won ceramic prizes and awards in Austria, Germany, Croatia, Lithuania and Hungary (see below), and has so far held 32 personal exhibitions and 112 group exhibitions in Austria, Germany, the Czech Republic , Italy , France , Belgium , Spain , Denmark and Lithuania , Hungary , Japan , Korea , Croatia and Egypt , as well as Latvia , Switzerland , the USA and Turkey .
Her works can be found in museums and public and private art collections in Austria, Germany, France, Switzerland, Holland, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Croatia, Korea, Japan and the USA.
She was and is also the curator of various exhibitions in the context of work at the University of Artistic and Industrial Design Linz , such as exhibitions as part of the “Akzente” exhibition program at the Gmunden Ceramic Weeks , or for the touring exhibitions of the Nö.-Art ( Lower Austrian Society for Art and Culture) 1993–2005. She also acted as a juror for ceramics and design prizes , such as the State Prize for Design and Crafts , the Salzburg Ceramics Prize and the Gmunden Ceramics Symposium . In addition, she is also active as a scientific author in the field of ceramic art (see publications section below) and as a reviewer for the accreditation of ceramic courses in Austria and Germany.
Maria Baumgartner is a member of the Tyrolean Artists' Association and the Salzburg Art Association .
To the work
According to the assessment of critics and specialist colleagues within modern ceramics, Maria Baumgartner's work is characterized by an independent formal language that develops the basic ceramic shape of the vessel into sculptural objects by playing with seemingly geometrical shapes and abstract, painterly design of the surfaces. Artist colleague Marga Persson writes :
“The flowing transition between vessel and sculpture, which is increasingly expressed in her work, is based on the intensive preoccupation with space and spatial dynamic aspects of three-dimensionality ... Maria Baumgartner experimentally plays with phenomena of balance and gravity and thus creates shapes surprising independence ... The cavity, the space in the bowl ... develops a matter of course that one can remain untouched and empty. The vessel thus loses its function as such ... The transformation into a sculptural object is inherent in Maria Baumgartner's vessel forms ... In her newer objects, the sculptural aspect is (even) more clearly illustrated ... A clear characteristic of the artistic direction ... is (it), a valid one To create a connection between sculptural form and a surface designed with artistic means ... She understands ceramics as an artistic means of expression that she masters in a stupendous manner without getting lost in repetitions ... With the independent vessel-sculptural form development and the painterly-sculptural form formulation she is one of the most important representatives of plastic-ceramic art in Austria. "
The following selection from Maria Baumgartner's works should illustrate this a little. While earlier works still refer to the interpretation of classic shapes, such as the bowl or cylinder shape (see Fig. 1, Fig. 2), more complex, rather thin-walled wave shapes with differentiated surface glaze developed as a result (Fig. 3, Fig . 4). Since the early 2000s, thick-walled vessel sculptures have been added that experiment with straight angles and partly. reminiscent of architectural forms (Fig. 5, Fig. 6). The latest works dissolve this severity and offer a free play with form, glaze and color (Fig. 7, Fig. 8).
