“Movement Rhythm” (1970) by Kurt Ohnsorg

Kurt Ohnsorg (born December 25, 1927 in Sigmundsherberg , Lower Austria; † September 22, 1970 in Gmunden , Upper Austria) was an Austrian ceramist and university professor .

Live and act

Kurt Ohnsorg was a pioneer of modern ceramics in Austria. He studied at the then Academy of Applied Arts Vienna (with Robert Obsieger ; diploma in ceramics 1950) and then acquired in-depth artistic and practical knowledge as a guest in ceramics studios in Paris and Rome (until 1954). At the same time, he also worked in companies in the Austrian ceramics industry ( Gmundner ceramics , then Schleiss ceramics, both Gmunden ) and made small ceramic figures and scenes (mostly unique items) for the commercial market (1950–1960) in order to earn a living.

However, he wanted to practice ceramics primarily as a medium of art, and therefore founded a ceramics experimental studio in Vienna in 1954, and in 1955 took over the so-called handicraft workshop in Porzellangasse (sic!) 26 in Vienna, which is still today (as a ceramic Workshop) continues. He then founded the Josef Hoffmann Seminar for Ceramic Design in Vienna in 1961 (with Alfred Seidl, in the legal form of an association), which pursued the cooperation between industry, trade and art, but placed the artistic dimension in the foreground (and as an association after Ohnsorg's death (1970) until 1978).

In 1961 Kurt Ohnsorg switched from Schleiß -Keramik to ÖSPAG in Wilhelmsburg as a designer and worked in their art ceramics studio a . a. active in the (new) design of the series “Daisy” and “Corinna” ( lily porcelain ), where he created various shapes that are still in demand as collector's items today.

He then initiated the Gmunden Ceramic Symposium in 1963 and directed it until his death in 1970. At that time, the Gmunden Symposium was the first symposium specifically for ceramic art worldwide. It was revived in 2003 and has taken place regularly ever since.

In 1969 Ohnsorg was appointed to the art school of the city of Linz (today: University of Artistic and Industrial Design Linz ) and founded the master class in ceramics (which still exists today as the Department of Plastic Concepts / Ceramics) . This work ended in 1970 through his suicide , and his assistant at the time, Günter Praschak, took over the chair / master class in ceramics from 1972, which was later led on an interim basis by Maria Baumgartner after Praschak's retirement (2004) ; and was taken over by Frank Louis from 2008 after changing visiting professorships .

Ohnsorg's works can be found in numerous public and private collections, such as the Museum of Applied Arts Vienna , the Federal Art Collection ( Albertina and MUMOK locations ) , the Lentos Art Museum Linz , the art collections of the states of Upper Austria , Lower Austria and Vienna , the collection of the Central Savings Bank Municipality of Vienna , the Conrad H. Lester collection, the collections of the Kammerhof Museum Gmunden, the Musée Ariana (Musée suisse de la céramique et du verre - Swiss Museum of Ceramics and Glass), Geneva , etc. a.

He is also present with works of art in public spaces (in Vienna , Linz or Gmunden , see below).

Kurt Ohnsorg was a member of the Acadèmie Internationale de Céramique (AIC / IAC), the Artists 'Association of the Wiener Künstlerhaus , the Salzkammergut Artists' Guild, the World Crafts Council (WCC), Section Austria and Europe (WCC Vice President from 1969), as well as the Upper Austria. Werkbund.

Elfriede Jelinek on works by Kurt Ohnsorg

The Austrian Nobel Prize winner Elfriede Jelinek wrote in 2010 (on the occasion of the exhibition of works by Kurt Ohnsorg in the Zacherlfabrik ) in the newspaper Die Presse :

These wonderful things that Ohnsorg produced very often have a purpose, serve a purpose, and it is a great achievement when beauty also has a purpose, although it is in and of itself and would like to remain in itself ... These are everyday objects that should also be used, and at the same time they strictly indicate that this provision is crossed out by the user by being asked to use it. The challenged ... has expressly named and even shown this definition of the work, but now he cannot find any expression for what it is that he is supposed to use. Beauty hit him in the face when he tried to put a particularly pretty arrangement of twigs in this vase. For a brief moment he is blind, dazzled, he should not approach the purpose of these objects so openly, which is so obvious ... What nonsense is beauty in that it has not made us beautiful, which would be so much more practical, because then we could take it everywhere, not us, but these objects? Should we find out from these works that they will never actually be what they are by being used as what they can or should be, and are they no longer that because they are always (in pieces, in splinters) could come to an end, perishable as they are? (…) These works of art cannot be laid out, they can be put down somewhere, but not laid out. They are not carpeting. There they stand, but not in a display, where they could just as well stand, at any time, in the certainty of themselves, to be fragile and at the same time to have reached their end point, which the artist has determined for them. You have the possibility, no, the certainty of coming to an end one day (as every life has it), through an act of violence or through a fall, a fall from high above, you have this possibility, but we, we have the security. Maybe it is that: Beauty has the possibility of ending, we also have the security that it will definitely end. That is the very thing that these works of art also contain. They are not what they are. You are. "

(Excerpt from: Elfriede Jelinek: Ohnsorg or: The extreme possibility. You have to celebrate the festival, because if it falls, it can break. On the 40th anniversary of Kurt Ohnsorg's death: about his ceramic works of art and their beauty , in: Die Presse , Print edition, August 28, 2010).

  57. Here is the full text: “For us, Josef Hoffmann is not just the name of a famous Austrian architect. He is the representative of a modern form of handicraft, which, due to its wealth, does not require a formal system which then excludes everything else from a contradictory perspective. He accepted everything that was tackled with talent. His motto was: 'Leave them alone, everyone, the most important thing is that someone tries something. Something will look out of it. ' Above all, he knew about the necessity of handicraft: that without the qualities of handicraft we will not get far stylistically, that its positive elements are also required in the production of large numbers. On the occasion of Josef Hoffmann's 90th birthday and the associated memorial exhibition, people spoke of the 'missed chance of Josef Hoffmann'. A formula that can be used to go back to the agenda without any further obligation. A convenient excuse for all imitators and gossipers who leaf through the new publications with a fleeting finger and fix this collective impression under the heading of world recognition. Hoffmann's chance is not taken at all! His principles around every formal possibility of the concrete object are as relevant as ever. The fanaticism of design that dominates us today, with all its lack of imagination, and the decline of craftsmanship that can literally be derived from it, require intervention in the spirit of Hoffmann. The great misunderstanding of the 'pure form', carefully avoided by the northerners, leads to a dead end. The love of handicraft is not to be seen as a sentimental inclination, but as the most perfect possibility for people to deal with the matter. And you can't spare yourself this argument. No creative person should be spared it if he does not want to stick to the surface of the appearances. Of course, that means work. But the shortcut to prosperity (read culture) is a dangerous thing. It easily becomes a crime against the Holy Spirit. Researching and designing on the basis of craftsmanship should be our task to rediscover the wealth of matter for us and all and to pass it on without reservation. We are of the opinion that real artistry can only emerge from mastery, both from mastering one's own personality and from that of matter. But anyone who does not take the trouble of mastering the matter can be considered questionable both as a personality and as an artist. This responsibility led us to the idea of the Hoffmann Seminar. "

  63. here the text there in the wording: "My considerations ... in the context of the Linz art school are made with a view to a later academy ... The learning goal (ceramic training) is: Free creative achievements at the highest level in the field of caramel with complete mastery of the craft -Technical knowledge and (of) industrial production processes ... During the training, value is placed on the fact that all graduates are able to approach production tasks in industry and trade as well as freelance artists immediately after completing their studies are able to use the experience and contacts they have gained during their studies to implement their ideas in a professional manner. For this purpose, recipes for important glazes, mass types and a list of modern specialist literature are provided. "
  64. Here is the full text: “Ceramic is a comprehensive term that ranges from simple brick production to fine ceramic industrial goods to unique vessels and colored sculpture. The unifying element of this wide area is a profound technical knowledge of the entire field of ceramics. This is the only way to establish contacts between industry and the artists. The time of the small business is a thing of the past in ceramics. This mostly technically flawed small-scale production, which tries to make a virtue out of its defects and thus produces tasty consumer goods, is actually a separating factor between function and free creative creation. Just like those elaborates when pure sculptors and painters make use of ceramic material. The latter can be appealing and stimulating, but leads astray. The ceramic material carries its design language and only thorough knowledge and experience opens the way to it. In my symposiums and seminars I always try to bring technicians from industry and artists to a mutual exchange of experiences and work together. Only a common language and formula notation will enable the free work of art to radiate across the entire subject area. Most of my work is done in an industrial company, and I use the techniques and materials that predominate there. Not because it is more convenient, but because it would be absurd not to use the beauties of the rhythm of a living production area for functional, creative activities. This is how a porcelain stele was created for Raach (note: Seminar Center Raach am Gebirge, Lower Austria), which simultaneously pushes the nomadic nature of the creative search and the sum of the diligence of a 'white earth' production facility up into a prayer. 66. here is the text there: “The semester started on February 16 (1970). The following students were accepted: Waltraud Viehböck (Magistra, metal class) [correct: Waltrud Viehböck ], Mika Bach (ceramic workshop as an autodidact), Susanne Weixelbaumer (graphic designer), Ingrid Grininger (banking and sculpture), Sylvia Ullmann (graduate of the Höhr- Grenzhausen / ceramics), Helmut Peschek (painter) [correct: Helmut Beschek], Mehmed Uyanik (graduate of the Academy in Istanbul and 2 semesters "Applied" in Vienna), Günter Praschak (designer in Denmark) and Erol Denec (musician and painter) (The information in brackets is the previous education). The practical analyzes and calculations of glazes and masses were worked through chemically and technically, so that every student is now able to make independent analyzes for trade and industry and to create glazes and masses. Vessel and free plastic as a unique specimen, reproduction methods and drafts were made. There are agreements with the companies ÖSPAG, Sommerhuber, Weixelbaumer and Bachmanning (porcelain, tile and brick production), according to which the students can acquire industrial experience as interns at the expense of these firms. At the same time, some of the students' designs are being tested in these companies. The ÖSPAG company gave the class a one cubic meter stoneware kiln and a large control unit. The publishing house 'talk room' from Coburg donated 20 specialist books, the above mentioned Firnen provided material and fires. For the coming semester there are inquiries from Sweden, Germany, Japan etc. It is planned to intensify the cooperation and the exchange of experiences with the industry in the coming semester. In minor subjects, lectures were held on psychology, sociology, cybernetics, religious studies, art history, literature, etc., which were given by well-known scientists. The results of the first semester will be exhibited in the class at the end of June. Schoolchildren are sent to symposia abroad. "
