Ceramic Symposium Gmunden

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gmunden Ceramic Symposium is an international symposium for artists of modern ceramics in Gmunden am Traunsee in Upper Austria .

history

Beginnings 1963–1978

The symposium was founded in 1963 by the Austrian ceramic artist Kurt Ohnsorg (who ran his summer studio at the time in Gmunden at the foot of the Grünberg ). Ohnsorg was inspired by the pioneering sculptor symposia organized by artist colleague Karl Prantl in the Roman quarry St. Margarethen since 1959 and created the first symposium in the world specifically for ceramic art.

It took place six times in Gmunden under Ohnsorg's direction (organized by the “Gmunder Exhibition Association” and the Vienna “Josef Hoffmann Seminar for Ceramic Design” ), initially (1963) as the “Gmunden Summer Seminar for Ceramics” , then until 1967 under the name “ International Gmundner Summer Seminar for Ceramics ” . The 6th Symposium in 1969 was then named “6. International Ceramics Symposium Gmunden ” , and an“ Association of International Ceramics Symposium Gmunden ”was launched as a sponsoring association.

The symposium was conceived as a ceramic workshop and seminar in cooperation with the Austrian Sanitary Ceramic and Porcelain Industry Corporation ( ÖSPAG ) (brand names Lilienporzellan and Austrovit sanitary ceramics), which was taken over in 1967 by “ Laufen-Keramik ”. ÖSPAG made its production facility in Gmunden-Engelhof available for the artistic activities.

The first symposium in 1963 (in addition to the ÖSPAG mentioned above) was also supported by the Gmundner company Schleiß -Keramik, the last symposium in 1969 by the company Gmundner Keramik .

With the suicide (1970) of Kurt Ohnsorg, who was only appointed professor at the then "Art School of the City of Linz" in 1969, and the end of the cooperation with ÖSPAG after it was taken over by Laufen (company) , the symposium lost its anchor points in Gmundner. There were attempts to continue it from 1970 under the direction of Kurt Spurey , but the other ceramic symposia in the Gmunden tradition initially took place in other places, such as in 1972 in Stoob ( Burgenland ) or 1974 in Vösendorf ( Lower Austria ). In 1978 a ceramic symposium took place for the last time under the direction of Kurt Spurey in Gmunden as “7. International Ceramic Symposium Gmunden ”.

Basics from 1989

From 1989 the artistic tradition at the location of the porcelain and ceramic production in Gmunden was revived by the organization of the ceramic weeks in Gmunden , which has been held annually since then . Here, the so-called pottery market in Gmunden was joined from the beginning (on the initiative of Günter Praschak , the successor of Kurt Ohnsorg at what is now the University of Artistic and Industrial Design Linz , and Maria Baumgartner , who also taught there from 1986 ), an accompanying program with art exhibitions and Symposia, called " accents ". On the basis of an artistic tradition, which has since grown again, the concept of an international artist symposium was revived and re-implemented in 2003.

New start from 2003

Co-initiator (in addition to the city of Gmunden and the ceramics department at the Art University Linz ) and main sponsor was and is the remaining significant Gmundner ceramics company, the traditional Gmundner ceramics factory (owner at the time Johannes Graf v. Moy ), which was founded on the occasion of the 100th -year anniversary at the Gmunden location (= since 1903 as "Schleiss-Keramik") in 2003 as a sponsor. Since then, the symposium has been given the additional name "KUNST.WERKSTATT der Gmundner Keramik" .

The Gmunden Ceramics Symposium has been officially sponsored by the Association for the Promotion of European Ceramic Artists . The symposium is organized together with the above-mentioned Gmunden Ceramic Weeks by the cultural department of the city of Gmunden.

The ceramic symposium as a traveling exhibition

A special feature of the Gmunden Ceramics Symposium since 2003 is that the works created there are then presented in various locations and art museums throughout Europe in the form of a traveling exhibition. Details can be found in the following overview.

Topics, participants, exhibition locations

At the seminars / symposia led by Kurt Ohnsorg, the participants were selected by Ohnsorg in his capacity as artistic director of the “Josef Hoffmann Seminar for Ceramic Design” (co-organizer of the symposia), from 1964 onwards from a growing number of international registrations.

Participation in the "new" Gmunden ceramics symposium from 2003 was and will be advertised internationally (Europe-wide), the participants selected by a jury , and the exhibition of the works accompanied and curated by an advisory board .
