Klaus Schultze (* 1927 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German sculptor who is known for his work in ceramics and brick .

Life

From 1948 to 1951, Schultze first completed a pottery apprenticeship in Constance. From 1952 to 1955 he worked in various ceramic workshops in Paris . The following year he set up his own studio in Gournay-sur-Marne . The first ceramic sculptures were created from 1960. In 1964 he was awarded the Bavarian State Prize. In 1979, he was offered a professorship for ceramics at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . In 1993 he retired.

Schultze has lived and worked in Überlingen -Goldbach / Bodensee since 1992 .

In Paris, Schultze initially created practical ceramics, later ceramic sculptures followed. During a stay in Siena in 1969 he discovered brick - because it was versatile, unbreakable and weatherproof - as an ideal means of expression for himself. Since then, large-format brick sculptures have been created that have made Schultze internationally known. Schultze has been using grids and reinforcement bars in his sculptures since 1993 and inserts ceramic, colored glazed fragments, wire or colored cables into marquetry.

«The archaic-statuary and cubic-rudimentary quality of some figures arouses associations with the formal language of earlier cultures, reminiscent of idol or cult objects of bygone eras in their strictly frontal orientation and simple reduction. (...) The figures seem to have hidden powers and want to evoke something with meaningful gestures. (...) He calls the "release of childlike carefree" one of the goals of his work. » [Dr. Andreas Gabelmann]

«Klaus Schultze has regained some of this simplicity in the best sense of the word, something of the sleepwalking pictorial security of childlike design - in a roundabout way. This recovery of the elementary, the original, the naive fills his masonry art with the radiance of natural humanity. " [Peter M. Bode, 1985]
