Keramion (2014)

Foundation and development

The Keramion was built for the 65th birthday of the stoneware entrepreneur and collector Gottfried Cremer (1906–2005). The family shareholders and board members of the Cremer & Breuer group acted as financiers . Cremer used the house as a private gallery or private museum to store and present his collection of contemporary ceramics. In addition to sales exhibitions, seminars, conferences, lectures and symposia were also held there. In 2002 the Cremer private collection was merged with the municipal collection of historical ceramics - the Frechen Ceramics Museum at the time - to form the Keramion Foundation . Since then, the museum has been a special museum for ceramics, in which modern and contemporary art made of ceramic materials as well as applied work and design objects on a wide variety of topics are exhibited in special exhibitions. The two collections (regional historical ceramics and unique ceramics since the 1950s) form the important basis for museum activity.

architecture

The building was erected in 1971 by the Cologne architect Peter Neufert (1925–1999) and the engineer Stefan Polónyi (* 1930). Its overall shape is modeled on a potter's wheel. The round roof with a diameter of around 32 meters has five funnel-shaped pillars inside, which continue as round pillars in the basement.

When the foundation was established in 2002, the building was placed under a preservation order.

Collections

Historical ceramics

The permanent exhibition of the historical department shows a piece of the special Rhenish ceramic history: In Frechen pottery products have been made that are known as Pingsdorfer Ware , Rhenish stoneware and earthenware from the Lower Rhine. The Frechener Bartmann mugs are famous . They owe their name to the mask in the form of a bearded male face on the neck of the vessel. Another part of the collection is the so-called “Köln-Frechener” or “ Ooms'sche Keramik ”. Toni Ooms, the manager of the stoneware factory "Kalscheuer" at the time, had these building and fine ceramics manufactured in the specially set up department of the factory from around 1919 to 1934 according to designs by Cologne artists and sculptors.

Cremer Collection

The Frechen stoneware producer Gottfried Cremer has been collecting the collection since the 1950s. This includes around 5000 unique ceramic items from over 500 artists from 35 countries. The collection is therefore one of the largest private ceramic collections in Europe. Her focus is on German ceramics of the 20th century. Nevertheless, all well-known European ceramists are included. From the vessel to the free sculpture, from the relief or image plate to the installation , all areas are represented.

Newcomers

The collection of historical ceramics is continuously being expanded and expanded. On the basis of the Cremer Collection, the holdings of modern and contemporary unique ceramics are also being expanded. These are presented at the Keramion in changing special exhibitions under various thematic aspects.

Exhibitions

Usually, at least three presentations take place in parallel in the museum rooms. In addition to the permanent exhibition in the historical section, the visitor can see the current temporary exhibition of ceramics from the Cremer Collection. Thirdly, the special exhibitions, which change several times a year, convey the diverse uses of ceramic materials in the visual and applied arts and in design. The special exhibitions with a historical focus deal with archaeological or cultural-historical issues.

Frechen Ceramic Prize

Every three years, the Frechener Kulturstiftung, in cooperation with the Keramion, launches the “Frechener Keramikpreis” competition for young ceramists. A jury of experts will select the approximately fifteen applicants who will take part in the ceramic prize exhibition in the museum rooms. Three award-winning competition participants will also receive a cash prize.
